Patient N.C.S (15 years old) was diagnosed with a broken bone in the lower border of the left eye socket due to a traffic accident. The patient was then assigned to have minimally invasive osteosynthesis using absorbable miniplates. This is a new technique, with many advantages, ensuring aesthetic recovery for patients.
Jaw fusion surgery with screws is applied to patients with jaw fractures (possibly due to traffic accidents or daily life accidents…). Previously, patients were treated with an alloy brace, but after 6 to 12 months, they had to have surgery again to remove the miniplates. This method is expensive for patients, often leaves scars, and affects aesthetics.
Currently, at Thai Nguyen International Hospital, oral and maxillofacial specialists have performed the jaw bone fusion technique using absorbable screws, patients will only have to have surgery once.
Maxillofacial fusion surgery with absorbable screws
Absorbable miniplates are synthesized from the polymerization reaction of natural carbon derivatives. Compared to the conventional technique of using screws, the surgery using absorbable screws is more complicated because after drilling the bone, the hole must be drilled to fit the screw and there must be time to bend the splint in a liquid with relevant temperature. This method has many advantages such as the splint having high durability and biological properties, especially the absorbability that help the patient not need to undergo additional surgery to remove the splint.
Absorbable screw brace
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons said: Nowadays, absorbable screw systems are highly biocompatible and widely used. This is one of the methods of treating trauma, especially well used for children or upper jaw.
