In some people, symptoms are mild or there are no obvious signs or symptoms at all when infected with diphtheria. Many people still do not know about their disease when infected, so they easily transmit the disease to the community without showing symptoms of illness.
In tropical climates, people are susceptible to diphtheria, especially people with poor hygiene and living in crowded conditions are susceptible to the disease.
* Diphtheria can lead to the following complications if not treated:
Breathing problems: The toxins of the bacteria that cause diphtheria cause tissue damage in the immediate area of infection, most commonly the nose and throat. The infection creates a grayish crust at the site of dead cells, bacteria, and other substances that interfere with breathing.
– Heart attack: Diphtheria toxin can damage other tissues in the body when spreading through the bloodstream, such as the heart muscle, leading to complications of myocarditis… Manifested by small abnormalities on the electrocardiogram or severe enough to lead to congestive heart failure and sudden death.
– Nerve damage: Diphtheria toxin can also cause nerve damage, specifically the nerves in the throat, making it difficult to swallow, and in the arms and legs, causing inflammation and muscle weakness.
* To effectively prevent diphtheria, each person needs to raise their awareness by getting fully vaccinated. Currently, diphtheria can be treated with medication. Therefore, when there are signs of suspected infection, you need to go to a medical facility with a team of experienced doctors and equipped with advanced and modern machinery to receive timely treatment and avoid dangerous complications.
