YEN BINH THAI NGUYEN GENERAL HOSPITAL SUCCESSFUL SURGERY FOR A PATIENT WHO FELL FROM A HEIGHT OF MORE THAN 2M TO A HARD GROUND

On July 12, 2023, doctors from the General Surgery Department of Yen Binh Thai Nguyen General Hospital, performed surgery to relieve compression of lumbar spine injury for Mr. M.V.C (49 years old, Dong Cao ward, Pho Yen city).

Previously, on July 10, 2023, Mr. C had an accident in his daily life, fell from a height of more than 2m to a hard floor, after the fall, he suffered from severe lower back pain, limited mobility, so he was immediately hospitalized for examination and treatment.

The results of X-ray, computed tomography showed: Image of broken body of the vertebral L1 causing the transverse spinal stenosis; L1 posterior arch fracture of the right side.

After the specialist consultation, the doctors concluded: The patient has a fracture of L1, pressing the roots and L1 nerve plexus, unstable lumbar spine. The patient was prescribed surgery to release the compression and fix the spine with screw.

Therefore, when someone falls from a height, the people around should not immediately pick them up, avoid displacing the injured spinal segments and need to quickly call an ambulance. While waiting for medical staff to arrive, it is necessary to check the victim for any other injuries. If the patient is awake, only bleeding, the wound should be bandaged, and if the arm or leg is broken, the broken area should be properly fixed. Proper first aid will have a great influence on the patient’s later treatment and recovery.
