RECURRENT VAGINITIS: CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

14/12/2024

Recurrent vaginitis is a serious health problem that affects the quality of life and psychology of many women. This condition occurs when infections are treated but not completely cured, or due to factors that increase the risk of recurrence. Understanding the causes and applying effective preventive measures is necessary to limit this condition.

1. There are many causes of recurrent vaginitis, including:

  • Changes in the vaginal environment: The vagina is an ecosystem that balances beneficial and harmful bacteria. The use of antibiotics, chemicals in cleaning solutions, or hormonal changes (due to menstruation, pregnancy or menopause) can upset this balance, creating conditions for bacteria and fungi to thrive, causing inflammation.
  • Incomplete treatment: Some women stop taking medication when symptoms improve without following the doctor’s regimen. This allows bacteria or fungi to persist, causing recurrence. In addition, not returning for a check-up after treatment can also lead to a prolonged illness.
  • Drug resistance: Drug resistance often occurs when patients arbitrarily use drugs according to old prescriptions or without a doctor’s prescription. This makes bacteria resistant to drugs and makes it difficult to control the disease.
  • Infection from sexual partners: Sexually transmitted diseases such as yeast, trichomonas, Chlamydia, or gonorrhea can be re-infected by sexual partners if they are not treated at the same time.
  • Antibiotic abuse: Prolonged use of antibiotics not only kills harmful bacteria but also affects beneficial bacteria in the vagina. This changes the vaginal pH and reduces the body’s immunity.

2. Symptoms may vary depending on the cause, but the most common include:

  • Itching and discomfort: Frequent vaginal itching.
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge: Discharge is milky white, yellow-green, or has an unpleasant odor.
  • Pain and burning: A burning sensation when urinating or having sex.
  • Redness and swelling: The vulva area may be red and swollen or irritated.

If not treated promptly, vaginitis can lead to complications such as inflammation of the upper genital organs, affecting fertility and increasing the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs).

3. Prevention and treatment solutions:

To prevent and treat recurrent vaginitis, women need to pay attention to the following measures:

  • Have safe sex: Use condoms and treat both partners at the same time to avoid cross-infection.
  • Keep the genital area clean properly: Use appropriate cleaning solutions, avoid overusing products with strong chemicals. In addition, wearing breathable clothes and avoiding tight clothes also help reduce the risk of irritation.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Strengthen the immune system by eating healthy, exercising, and avoiding stress.
  • Regular check-ups: Regular gynecological check-ups help detect health problems early and treat them promptly.
  • Follow the treatment regimen: Take the medicine completely and as directed by your doctor, do not stop taking the medicine on your own even if the symptoms have subsided.

Vaginitis not only causes discomfort but also affects the quality of life and reproductive health. Raising awareness of self-care and taking preventive measures are important factors to help women protect their vaginal health. If suspicious symptoms appear, consult your doctor for timely advice and treatment.
