Fever is a common symptom when children have an infection. High fever can lead to convulsion.
Changing seasons and humid weather are favorable conditions for outbreaks of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. When a child has a fever, it may mean that the body has an infection (bacteria, virus, parasites…).
Recommendations for parents caring for children with fever
– When children have a fever, they often show signs of: chills, purple streaks, etc. Parents should dress their children in light and airy clothes. Do not keep your child too warm as this will cause the child’s fever to increase.
– In case a child has a fever over 38.5 degrees celsius, we can use some antipyretic drugs such as paracetamol, dosage from 10 – 15mg/kg body weight/time and every 4-6 hours. The dose can be repeated once (if the child still has a fever). Or using Ibuprofen as prescribed by your doctor.
– In addition to taking antipyretic medicine, parents should use warm water for children (with temperature of 2oC lower than body temperature); at the following locations: forehead, armpit, groin, whole body and turn over continuously to help reduce fever faster. Do not apply cold water, nor use too hot water.
– Parents should also pay attention to children’s nutrition, rehydration and electrolytes with common solutions such as oresol and fruit juice.
In the diet, you should use foods that children like, can be cooked thinner, are easy to digest, divided into small meals but focus on providing enough water because most children are lazy to eat during this period and should not try to force them because it can cause vomiting, causing further dehydration.
Take your child to see a doctor in the following cases:
– Fever with other unusual symptoms: Change in the child’s consciousness (lethargy, drowsiness), convulsions, weakness, difficulty breathing;
– High fever over 40 degrees Celsius’;
– Continuous high fever, fever that does not respond to fever-reducing medications;
– Fever lasts for 3 days;
– Children are tired and cannot eat or drink.
Note:
– For children with a history of high fever and convulsions, use fever reducer when the child has a fever of 38 degrees Celsius or higher.
– Do not arbitrarily use seizure prophylaxis without a doctor’s prescription.
– Do not increase the dose of fever reducer, do not use fever reducer continuously before it is time to use it, it will cause poisoning for the child.
