Thai Nguyen International Hospital successfully performed surgery on a patient with dangerous chronic mastoiditis with an exposed meninges cholesteatoma and VII nerve exposure. The procedure was led by a leading ENT specialist in Vietnam: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phong, former Head of the ENT Department at the National ENT Hospital and former Deputy Head of the ENT Department at Hanoi Medical University.
Mrs. M.T.P, 41, from Linh Son, Thai Nguyen City, had a history of recurrent foul-smelling discharge from her left ear, accompanied by tinnitus and hearing loss. After multiple unsuccessful medical treatments, she was examined at Thai Nguyen International Hospital where a cholesteatoma eroding the bone in her left ear was discovered, posing several dangerous complications that required immediate surgical intervention to remove the erosive lesion and prevent further complications.

The patient underwent endoscopic radical mastoidectomy through the ear canal to completely remove the cholesteatoma lesion, revealing exposed meninges and the VII nerve, and destroying the ossicular chain in the mastoid cavity.
With the advantages of endoscopic surgery, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phong reconstructed the ossicular chain using a bioceramic prosthesis crafted by Dr. Phan Anh Linh (a specialist in reconstructing ossicles with bioceramic prostheses), both preserving hearing and completely removing the disease in a single operation. After six days of intensive treatment, the patient’s health stabilized, hearing improved, and mobility returned to normal.

Chronic mastoiditis with cholesteatoma is a dangerous inflammatory condition of the mastoid, prone to complications and recurrence. The surgery is highly complex, requiring skilled surgeons and modern equipment. Patients can now undergo surgery confidently at Thai Nguyen International Hospital, personally performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phong, a leading expert in ENT endoscopic surgery, without the need to travel far or wait for surgery.
