VACCINATION FOR GRANDPARENTS AND PARENTS – A MEANINGFUL NEW YEAR GIFT OF HEALTH
As people grow older, their immune systems gradually weaken. Illnesses that may seem as simple as the flu can lead to pneumonia, severe complications, hospitalization, and prolonged fatigue. Out of love and care, do not wait until your parents or grandparents fall ill before rushing to seek treatment.
Vaccination is a practical and proactive way to show your care—helping prevent disease early, saving time, and protecting their later years with greater peace of mind. Taking your parents or grandparents for vaccination can be a simple yet meaningful “health gift” at the beginning of the year. Sometimes, an appointment for vaccination is more valuable than any material present.
Important Vaccines Older Adults Should Consider
1. Seasonal Influenza Vaccine – Protection Once a Year
Influenza is not just a common respiratory illness; it can cause serious complications, especially in older adults and those with underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or chronic lung disease. Vaccination helps reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
Because influenza viruses change each year, the vaccine is updated seasonally.
Suggested schedule: One dose annually, ideally before the flu season to allow the body time to build immunity.
2. Pneumococcal Vaccine – A “Shield” for the Lungs
Pneumococcal bacteria can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Older adults are at higher risk of severe complications. In Vietnam, newer-generation pneumococcal vaccines for adults are now available.
Vaccination schedule: Depending on age and vaccination history, older adults should consult a doctor to determine the most appropriate vaccine type and schedule.
3. Diphtheria – Pertussis – Tetanus Vaccine (Tdap/Td) – Booster for Continued Protection
Immunity against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and tetanus can decrease over time. Booster shots in adulthood help maintain protection. Tetanus, in particular, can occur following contaminated wounds or cuts.
Suggested schedule: Booster dose every 10 years, as recommended.
4. Hepatitis A & B Vaccines – Protecting the Liver from Unpredictable Risks
Individuals who have never been vaccinated and belong to higher-risk groups (such as travelers, certain occupational or lifestyle exposures) should consider vaccination.
The hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for adults, particularly those aged 19–59. Adults aged 60 and above with risk factors—or those who wish to be protected—may also receive the vaccine after medical consultation.
5. Shingles (Herpes Zoster) Vaccine – Reducing the Risk of Long-Lasting Nerve Pain
Shingles is not only a painful rash; postherpetic neuralgia can persist long after the rash resolves, significantly affecting sleep and quality of life in older adults. This newer vaccine is now available in Vietnam and is recommended for individuals aged 50 and above.
Important Notes for Families
- Older adults often have underlying medical conditions, so pre-vaccination screening and consultation with a doctor are recommended to determine the most suitable vaccines and schedule.
- Some vaccines can be administered during the same visit (at different injection sites), helping save time and travel.
This New Year, alongside heartfelt wishes, consider saying:
“Let me take you for vaccination, so we can all live happily and stay healthy for many years to come.”
