Severe, Harsh Cold Weather

Warning of Increased Disease Risks for the Community

Strengthening cold air has caused Northern Vietnam to enter a period of widespread severe cold. Many mountainous areas in the North are recording very low temperatures, with some places dropping to 0°C such as Mau Son (Lang Son). In Thai Nguyen and Bac Ninh, temperatures are fluctuating around 10–12°C.

Dr. Hoang Van Chung, MD, Specialist Level I

Deputy Director – Head of the Outpatient Department, Thai Nguyen International Hospital, warns the community:

“Sudden cold weather creates favorable conditions for many diseases to flare up, especially among the elderly, young children, and people with underlying medical conditions.”

People are strongly advised to keep warm, limit going outdoors, and strictly follow these principles:

  • Keeping warm properly: Pay special attention to keeping key areas warm such as the head, neck, chest, and soles of the feet. When going outside, wear a face mask to avoid inhaling cold air directly into the lungs.
  • Absolutely do not burn charcoal indoors in enclosed spaces, as this can cause carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which is extremely dangerous and may lead to coma or death if not detected in time.
  • Adequate nutrition: Prioritize cooked food and boiled water; supplement with foods rich in vitamin C and other nutrients to help boost immunity.
  • Daily routine: Avoid exercising too early in the morning or bathing too late at night. Use warm water for personal hygiene and bathe in a draft-free room.
  • Proactive health monitoring: If you experience unusual symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or severe headache, do not self-medicate at home. Please visit a medical facility promptly for timely examination and treatment.

Health is the most valuable asset.
