DENGUE FEVER: DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE SUDDEN HIGH FEVER IN CHILDREN

Concern as the outbreak season approaches

Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the Dengue virus, transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. In young children, an immature immune system makes the disease more likely to progress rapidly and cause serious complications. Therefore, having the right knowledge to care for and protect your child is essential for every family.

Early signs to watch for

Dengue fever often begins suddenly and progresses through different stages. Parents should pay close attention if their child shows the following symptoms:

  • Persistent high fever: A temperature of 39–40°C lasting from 2 to 7 days and difficult to reduce with common fever-reducing medications.
  • Bleeding signs: Red spots under the skin (rash), nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.
  • Fatigue and body aches: Irritability, loss of appetite, headache, pain behind the eyes, and muscle and joint pain.

Critical phase requiring special attention

Typically, from day 3 to day 7, the child’s fever may subside. However, this does not mean recovery—it is actually the most dangerous phase.

During this period, plasma leakage can occur, potentially leading to shock, organ failure, or internal bleeding—life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.

Proper home care guidance

If your child is advised by a doctor to be monitored at home, parents should:

  • Reduce fever safely: Use medication only as prescribed. Do not use Aspirin or Ibuprofen, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Ensure adequate hydration: Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids such as oral rehydration solution (ORS), fruit juice, or milk.
  • Provide appropriate nutrition: Offer soft, easy-to-digest foods like porridge or soup, divided into small, frequent meals.

When to seek immediate medical care

Take your child to the nearest healthcare facility immediately if any warning signs appear:

  • Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or vomiting blood
  • Prolonged nosebleeds or bleeding gums
  • Cold, clammy extremities; lethargy, restlessness, or unusual agitation

Proactive prevention for the whole family

Prevention remains the most effective way to protect your family:

  • Eliminate mosquito breeding sites: Remove standing water and turn over unused containers
  • Prevent mosquito bites: Dress children in long sleeves, use bed nets even during the day, and apply safe mosquito repellents
