SUCCESSFUL EMERGENCY TREATMENT OF A SHARP FOREIGN BODY LODGED DEEP IN THE ESOPHAGUS

The Functional Diagnostics Department of TNH Viet Yen Hospital has recently received and successfully treated a high-risk gastrointestinal foreign body case. The foreign object was a sharp metal fragment, suspected to have originated from a metal scouring pad, lodged deep in the middle section of the esophagus, posing a life-threatening risk if not promptly managed.

The patient, a 39-year-old female residing in Viet Yen Ward, was admitted with symptoms of painful swallowing, a sensation of obstruction in the neck and chest area, persistent discomfort, and an inability to eat. Clinical examination combined with esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a sharp metal foreign body firmly impacted in the esophagus. This location is particularly dangerous, with a high risk of esophageal perforation, bleeding, and mediastinal infection if intervention is delayed or performed improperly.

Following the procedure, the patient’s condition stabilized rapidly and she continued to receive postoperative monitoring and care under optimal conditions. No complications were recorded, and the patient made a good recovery.
