High temperatures during the summer significantly increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke in children, especially when they spend extended periods playing or engaging in outdoor activities. Because children’s thermoregulation mechanisms are not yet fully developed, they are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses than adults.

Healthcare professionals recommend that parents proactively equip themselves with accurate knowledge to protect their children during the hot season. Early recognition of warning signs such as fatigue, flushed and hot skin, excessive thirst, headache, dizziness, nausea, or high fever is essential for timely intervention and for reducing the risk of serious complications.

If heat exhaustion or heatstroke is suspected, the child should be moved immediately to a cool and well-ventilated place, excess clothing should be removed, the body should be cooled with water or cool towels, and fluids should be given if the child remains conscious and is able to drink. However, if the child develops severe symptoms such as persistent high fever, lethargy, seizures, difficulty breathing, or altered consciousness, urgent medical evaluation is required.

To help prevent heat-related illnesses in children during summer, parents are advised to:

  • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, especially from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Dress children in loose, lightweight, and breathable clothing.
  • Ensure children wear hats or other sun-protective accessories when outdoors.
  • Encourage adequate fluid intake even when the child does not feel thirsty.
  • Allow sufficient rest and avoid strenuous physical activity under direct sunlight.

Proactive prevention and appropriate first aid not only help protect children’s health but also ensure their safety during hot summer days. Every parent can play an important role in helping children enjoy a healthy, safe, and active summer.

🚑 Important: If a child shows signs suggestive of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, or if symptoms worsen, the child should be taken promptly to a healthcare facility for examination and timely treatment.
