ACTIVATING “CODE RED” – RACING AGAINST TIME TO SAVE A MULTI-TRAUMA PATIENT’S LIFE 🚨

On the night of May 12, 2026, TNH Viet Yen Hospital received patient N.V.V. (from Bach Dang Commune, Cao Bang Province) in critical condition following a severe accident resulting in multiple traumatic injuries.

Upon admission, the patient experienced severe pain in the chest and left abdomen, accompanied by multiple bleeding wounds and signs of progressive hemorrhagic shock. Clinical examination and imaging studies revealed several life-threatening injuries, including:

• Grade IV splenic rupture causing massive intra-abdominal bleeding
• Fractures of the 4th, 5th, and 6th ribs
• Left-sided pneumothorax
• Cerebral concussion
• Extensive skin avulsion injury to the forehead and left eyebrow area

Although the patient’s initial blood pressure remained at 100/60 mmHg, doctors determined that this was a “compensated hemorrhagic shock” state, with a high risk of sudden blood pressure collapse and cardiac arrest due to ongoing internal bleeding from the ruptured spleen.

Facing this life-threatening situation, the hospital immediately activated its internal “Code Red” emergency protocol. Emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, diagnostic imaging specialists, laboratory staff, and the blood bank team were urgently mobilized to coordinate rapid lifesaving interventions.

While receiving aggressive resuscitation and emergency blood transfusions, the patient was transferred directly to the operating room. The surgical team promptly performed an emergency splenectomy to control the bleeding and managed the associated traumatic injuries.

After hours of intense efforts and a race against time, the surgery was successful, saving the patient from the brink of death.
