The Functional Diagnostics Department at Thai Nguyen International Hospital recently received an elderly patient presenting with difficulty swallowing and throat pain after taking medication. According to the initial information, the patient had swallowed a film-coated tablet whole and experienced discomfort shortly afterward.

Endoscopic intervention – A safe solution for esophageal foreign bodies

Following clinical examination, doctors suspected an esophageal foreign body and indicated a gastrointestinal endoscopy for evaluation and management.

Endoscopic findings revealed a film-coated tablet, approximately 2x2 cm in size, lodged in the esophagus. The surrounding esophageal mucosa showed signs of abrasion and injury.

During the procedure, doctors successfully removed the foreign body, ensuring patient safety while minimizing invasiveness. After the intervention, the patient’s condition stabilized, and symptoms such as dysphagia and pain significantly improved.

Warning from improper medication use in the elderly

This case highlights potential risks associated with improper medication intake, especially among elderly patients who may have difficulty swallowing.

Taking medication without adequate water, in an improper posture, or without supervision can lead to tablets becoming lodged in the esophagus, causing mucosal injury and potential complications.
