PLANT THORN INJURY TO THE CORNEA – A WARNING FROM DELAYED TREATMENT

Recently, the Ophthalmology Department at Thai Nguyen International Hospital received a patient presenting with persistent eye pain, foreign body sensation, and blurred vision. Four days prior, while gardening, the patient had a plant thorn strike the eye but did not seek medical attention promptly.

Upon examination, the foreign body had penetrated deeply into the cornea, causing stromal damage. In such cases, treatment is often prolonged and may pose risks to vision if not managed appropriately and in a timely manner.

Corneal Foreign Bodies – Risks from Everyday Activities

Routine activities such as gardening, pruning, and harvesting can pose hidden risks of foreign bodies (thorns, leaf fragments, wood splinters) entering the eye. Notably, plant-based foreign bodies often carry bacteria and fungi, increasing the risk of corneal infections and ulcers.

These conditions may progress silently, leading to delayed diagnosis. Late detection can result in more complicated treatment and may leave corneal scars, potentially affecting vision long-term.

Proper Management – Key to Preserving Vision

When suspecting a foreign body in the eye, patients should:

• Avoid rubbing the eye or attempting to remove the object at home
• Do not use eye drops without medical advice, especially those containing corticosteroids
• Gently cover the eye and minimize blinking or contact
• Seek prompt examination at a specialized ophthalmology facility for proper removal and treatment

Timely and appropriate management plays a crucial role in preserving vision and preventing complications.

Simple Prevention – Effective Eye Protection

To reduce the risk of eye injuries during daily activities:

• Wear protective eyewear when gardening or trimming plants
• Avoid working in conditions with strong winds or heavy dust
• Maintain good hygiene of hands and working tools
