STROKE STRIKES WITHOUT WARNING – RECOGNIZE IT EARLY AND SEEK EMERGENCY CARE PROMPTLY TO SAVE THE BRAIN

Stroke is a medical emergency that can occur in anyone, at any time. Every minute that passes results in the loss of millions of brain cells that cannot be recovered. However, if the patient is brought to a healthcare facility within the “golden window” of the first 4.5 hours, the chance of recovery is significantly higher and the risk of long-term disability can be greatly reduced.

Recognize Stroke Early with the BE FAST Rule

Healthcare professionals recommend remembering the BE FAST rule—a simple yet highly effective tool for early stroke recognition and timely emergency response.

B – Balance

  • Sudden loss of balance.
  • Dizziness or difficulty walking.

E – Eyes

  • Blurred vision.
  • Double vision.
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes.

F – Face

  • Facial drooping.
  • Uneven smile or facial asymmetry.

A – Arms

  • Weakness or paralysis of one arm.
  • Inability to raise both arms evenly.

S – Speech

  • Slurred speech.
  • Difficulty speaking.
  • Inability to speak or speaking incoherently.

T – Time

  • Call emergency services immediately and take the patient to the nearest hospital as soon as any of these signs appear.

Although BE FAST does not replace medical examination and diagnosis, remembering these warning signs can help detect stroke early, shorten the time to hospital arrival, and improve the effectiveness of treatment.

What You Should NOT Do When Stroke Is Suspected

Many patients lose valuable treatment time because inappropriate measures are taken at home. If stroke is suspected, do not:

  • Give the patient food or drinks.
  • Administer medications without medical advice.
  • Use traditional remedies such as coin rubbing, skin scraping, or other folk treatments.

These actions may delay emergency treatment and increase the risk of serious complications.

Time Is Brain

The most important principle in stroke management is:

Recognize early – Reach the hospital early – Receive timely treatment.

This is the key to saving brain tissue, saving lives, and minimizing long-term complications affecting movement, speech, and cognition.
