Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide. It can happen to anyone, at any age, and often occurs without warning.
According to medical experts, millions of brain cells die every minute during a stroke, and the damage is irreversible. However, if the patient receives emergency treatment within the golden window of 4.5 hours, the chances of recovery are significantly higher, while the risks of death and permanent disability are greatly reduced.
BEFAST: Know the Warning Signs of Stroke
Early recognition of stroke symptoms is critical for timely treatment. Everyone should remember the BEFAST rule:
- B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance, dizziness, or difficulty with coordination.
- E – Eyes: Sudden blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision in one or both eyes.
- F – Face: Facial drooping or an uneven smile.
- A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
- S – Speech: Slurred speech, difficulty speaking, or inability to understand speech.
- T – Time: If any of these signs appear, call emergency medical services or take the patient to the nearest stroke-capable hospital immediately.
What You Should Never Do If You Suspect a Stroke
If someone shows signs of a stroke, do not:
- Give the person food or drinks.
- Administer any medication without medical advice.
- Apply traditional remedies such as coin rubbing (coining), finger-pricking, or other folk treatments.
- Wait to see if the symptoms go away on their own.
These actions can delay life-saving treatment and increase the risk of severe complications.
Early Emergency Care Saves the Brain
Stroke is a medical emergency. Recognizing the symptoms early, getting the patient to the hospital immediately, and receiving timely treatment are the keys to saving brain function, improving survival, and minimizing long-term disability.
Whenever stroke is suspected, the patient should be taken to a hospital with stroke emergency and treatment capabilities as quickly as possible.
