Recently, the Department of General Surgery at TNH Pho Yen Hospital successfully treated patient N.T.A. (21 years old), who was admitted with persistent pain and discomfort in the right flank that significantly affected his health and daily activities.
Following clinical examination, laboratory tests, and diagnostic imaging, the doctors diagnosed the patient with right ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). This condition involves a narrowing at the junction between the renal pelvis and the ureter, obstructing the flow of urine from the kidney to the ureter, causing hydronephrosis and potentially leading to impaired kidney function if not treated promptly.
After multidisciplinary consultation, Dr. Nong Duc Thach, Specialist Level I, Deputy Head of the Department of General Surgery, indicated reconstructive surgery of the right ureteropelvic junction to correct the narrowing, restore normal urine drainage, and preserve renal function.
The surgery was performed successfully. Postoperatively, the patient recovered well, his pain decreased markedly, kidney function improved significantly, and he is currently continuing follow-up care at TNH Pho Yen Hospital.
According to Dr. Nong Duc Thach, ureteropelvic junction obstruction can occur in both children and adults and often progresses silently, making it easy to overlook. Patients should seek medical evaluation promptly if they experience symptoms such as:
- Recurrent flank or lower back pain.
- Painful urination or urinary urgency.
- Blood in the urine.
- Recurrent urinary tract infections.
- Persistent urinary disturbances.
Early medical examination and treatment help detect the disease in time, initiate appropriate management, and reduce the risk of irreversible kidney damage.
The Department of General Surgery – TNH Pho Yen Hospital is a trusted center for the treatment of surgical diseases, particularly in the fields of urology, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and trauma surgery. With an experienced team of physicians and modern medical equipment, the department routinely performs advanced surgical techniques, contributing to safe and effective treatment outcomes.
Doctors also recommend not ignoring persistent lower back or flank pain. Seeking medical attention early when abnormal symptoms appear is the key to timely diagnosis, preservation of kidney function, and long-term health protection.
