BLEPHARITIS WARNING – A SILENT THREAT TO YOUR EYE HEALTH
Don’t ignore seemingly “minor” symptoms
Waking up with eye discharge, a gritty sensation like sand in the eyes, persistent itching or burning throughout the day—these symptoms are often overlooked. However, they may indicate blepharitis, a common eye condition that can silently affect eye health if not properly managed.
What is blepharitis?
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid margins, occurring when the oil glands along the eyelids become blocked or infected. It can cause itching, redness, irritation, crusting at the base of the eyelashes, and tends to recur if not properly treated and cared for.
Common causes
Several factors may contribute to blepharitis, including:
- Blocked Meibomian (oil) glands
- Bacterial infection
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Allergies
- Poor eyelid hygiene
- Use of unsuitable cosmetics
Warning signs not to ignore
Blepharitis may present with:
- Burning or discomfort in the eyelids or eyes
- Red, watery eyes with swollen eyelid margins
- Itchy eyes, frequent rubbing or blinking
- Gritty sensation, crusting, sticky discharge, clumped eyelashes
- Light sensitivity, blurred vision, reduced visual clarity
These symptoms can persist and significantly impact daily activities and quality of life.
Proper care to prevent recurrence
To manage and reduce the risk of recurrence:
- Apply warm compresses for 5–10 minutes daily to improve gland function
- Clean eyelid margins with saline solution to remove debris and bacteria
- Keep hands clean and avoid rubbing the eyes
- Do not share towels or cosmetics
- Remove makeup thoroughly to prevent blockage of oil glands
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle and limit exposure to dust and pollution
When should you see a doctor?
If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical evaluation at a reputable healthcare facility for accurate diagnosis and timely treatment to prevent recurrence and complications.
